"We’ve already got past our expectations" - wywiad z Echoes

 

Czy moglibyście coś o sobie powiedzieć?

Josh, jestem wokalistą.

Jestem Steve, basista.

Wspólnie: dla Echoes [śmiech]

Jak powstał Wasz zespół?

Josh: Steve i ja poznaliśmy się na Uniwersytecie w Winchester i zaczęliśmy wspólnie improwizować. W tym czasie grałem na gitarze, ale skończyłem jako wokalista a Steve jako basista.

Steve: Było to swego rodzaju przemieszanie ludzi. Zespół nie powstał od razu, graliśmy razem około rok przed stworzeniem Echoes. Od tamtego czasu odnaleźliśmy swój styl i dźwięk.

Skąd jesteście?

Steve: Obecnie wszyscy mieszkamy na południu Wielkiej Brytanii, ale pochodzimy z Winchester, miasta oddalonego o około 1,5 godziny drogi od Londynu. Ja mieszkam w Reading, Angus w Maidenhead niedaleko Reading, a Ollie i Karl w Winchester…

Josh: Mieszkam na wyspie…. :-(

Steve: Josh mieszka na Isle of Wight.

Josh: Wyspa na środku pustkowia, na której nie ma nic oprócz bydła i pól.

Steve: I mnóstwa psów. 

Czy macie jakieś problemy z próbami dlatego że nie mieszkacie blisko siebie?

Josh: Pojawiają się trudności, ponieważ wszyscy pracujemy. Studiowaliśmy razem, a teraz każdy z nas zajmuje się czymś innym.

Steve: Ćwiczymy dwukrotnie w ciągu miesiąca. Zdajemy sobie sprawę z tego, że to nie wystarcza, ale Josh żeby dojechać na próbę musi złapać prom i pociąg, a ja i Angus jedziemy półtorej godziny.

Josh: Nie jest łatwo, ale dajemy sobie radę.

Co studiowaliście?

Steve: Większość z nas sztukę. Ja grafikę komputerową.

Josh: Ja studiowałem sztukę ze specjalizacją w malarstwie.

Steve: Ollie też studiował grafikę, a Karl to samo co Josh, zaś Angus studiuje rysunek. Sami kreatywni ludzie [śmiech]

Co robicie poza byciem muzykami?

 

[śmiech]

Steve: Pracuję w handlu detalicznym, tak jak Ollie i Karl.

Josh: Ja obsługuję maszyny.

Steve: [śmiech] Pracuje w beznadziejnym parku rozrywki na Isle of Wight… Angus jest barmanem.

Josh: Teraz musimy robić takie rzeczy.

Co chcecie osiągnąć jako zespół? 

Josh: Panowanie nad światem! [śmiech] Już teraz przeszliśmy nasze oczekiwania.

Steve: Kiedy zaczynaliśmy, nigdy nie marzyliśmy o graniu w Europie i na przykład byciu dzisiaj w Polsce, to naprawdę wspaniałe przeżycie. Chcemy nadal robić to samo, grać i tworzyć muzykę, która sprawia nam i innym przyjemność.

Josh: Jesteśmy bardzo wdzięczni za wszystko co nas spotkało.

Steve: Chcemy kontynuować to, co robimy i miejmy nadzieję, że będzie jeszcze lepiej.

Josh: Stadiony…. [śmiech]

Steve: Spełniają się nasze marzenia.

Którą piosenkę lubicie teraz najbardziej grać?

Steve: Pewnie tę, której nikt jeszcze nie słyszał. Pojawi się na naszym nowym albumie, który wyjdzie, miejmy nadzieję, wkrótce. Nazywa się For What It’s Worth i chyba najwięcej dla nas znaczy. Poza tym, przyjemnie gra się ją na żywo. Myślę, że reprezentuje nas najbardziej jako zespół.

Josh: Bardzo lubimy ją grać, nie stworzylibyśmy jej gdybyśmy nie lubili!

Wspomnieliście nowy album. Czy to jedyna rzecz którą zamierzacie niedługo wydać?

Josh: Nagraliśmy go w październiku i teraz czekamy…

Możecie coś więcej o nim powiedzieć?

Steve: Nie za bardzo, wydajemy pierwszy singiel Honour Lost w czerwcu, którego zapowiedź można zobaczyć na YT.

Josh: Nakręciliśmy wideo do tego utworu.

Jak idzie Wam trasa?

Steve: Naprawdę dobrze.

Josh: Świetnie, przerosła nasze oczekiwania!

Steve: Otworzyła nam oczy na wiele rzeczy, mamy na pewno lepszą publiczność i lepszy odbiór tutaj niż w Anglii.

Josh: Jak w ogóle ludzie znają słowa naszych piosenek? Nie mam pojęcia jak to możliwe….

Steve: Wszyscy są bardzo gościnni, świetnie się bawiliśmy, żadne słowa nie oddadzą naszej wdzięczności dla Europy.

Możecie się podzielić jakimiś śmiesznymi historiami, które przydarzyły się Wam w trasie?

 

Steve: Nic śmiesznego się nie wydarzyło, ale kiedy graliśmy w Bratysławie było bardzo dziwnie, a zarazem wspaniale. Dziwnie, bo przyszło bardzo dużo ludzi, którzy nas znali – jeden chłopak jechał 9 godzin żeby nas zobaczyć!

Josh: Jechać nawet jedną godzinę żeby nas zobaczyć to szaleństwo! To uczy pokory.

Steve: Poświęcenie dla nas 18 godzin z jego życia to wariactwo. Występ tamtego wieczoru był dla nas podsumowaniem tego co robimy i dlaczego to robimy – wtedy uświadomiliśmy sobie jak bardzo szczęśliwi jesteśmy.

Josh: Poznaliśmy wspaniałych ludzi i ten chłopak był z pewnością jednym z nich. 9 godzin! Głupota.

Czy jesteście zdziwieni, że wzbudzacie tak duże zainteresowanie, szczególnie dzisiaj w Warszawie? Przed chwilą nagraliście Leaving None Behind, a teraz macie wywiad…

Steve: Dzisiejszy dzień jest nie z tego świata. Już samo poznanie Was, nagranie piosenki do wideo i robienie paru rzeczy na bloga jest super. Robimy to pierwszy raz i nie jesteśmy do tego przyzwyczajeni. Oprowadzono nas po mieście, zabrano na obiad – to nie zdażyłoby się tam, skąd pochodzimy. 

Josh: Nawet w innych państwach, w których byliśmy. Było nam tak miło.

Steve: Potraktowano nas jak królów i nie mamy pojęcia dlaczego [śmiech]. Jest wspaniale, Warszawa jest uroczym miastem. 

Podoba się Wam Warszawa? Słyszałam, że zwiedziliście centrum miasta?

Josh: Tak, jest piękne!

Steve: Tak, byliśmy na Starym Mieście, Nowym Świecie, jedliśmy typowe polskie kluski. To był pierwszy raz podczas tej trasy, kiedy mieliśmy okazję spróbować tradycyjnych potraw i to niezwykle przyjemne mieć taką okazję. 

Muszę Was tego nauczyć – te kluski to po polsku “pierogi”.

Josh i Steve: [po paru razach idealnie] Pierogi [śmiech]

Steve: Jestem w połowie Polakiem i nie umiem mówić po polsku… Winię za to mojego tatę! [śmiech]

Josh: Następnym razem w Europie spróbujemy więcej regionalnych rzeczy.

 Które zespoły najbardziej na Was wpłynęły?

Steve: Nie jest tak prosto powiedzieć, czerpiemy z wielu nurtów. Moim ulubionym zespołem jest Rinoa. Kiedy zaczynaliśmy stylizowaliśmy się na nich, teraz już tego nie robimy. Słuchamy też sporo post rocka.

Josh: I instrumentalnych rzeczy, unikamy za to metalu.

Steve: Inspirujemy się rozmaitymi zespołami, co na nas dobrze wpływa. 

Czego słuchacie teraz w trasie?

Steve: The boys of summer.

Josh: Kiczowatej muzyki z lat 80’.

Steve: Słuchamy też Daughter, świetnego, post rockowo-ambientowego zespołu z Wielkiej Brytanii.

Josh: Tak, są naprawdę dobrzy. Trochę Linkin Park, Fleetwood Mac.

Steve: Coldplay.

Ich nowego albumu czy starszych?

Steve: Wolę ich starsze albumy, na przykład Rush of Blood to the Head. Coldplay są świetni, kocham ich. I oczywiście słuchamy LANY DEL RAY! Lana Del Ray…. Kocham cię!

Josh: CO? [śmiech] 

Jaki był pierwszy koncert na który poszliście?

Josh: Mój tata zabrał mnie na Alice Cooper i Journey na festiwal.

Steve: Ja chyba byłem na Jacku Johnsonie. 

Jeżeli mielibyście wybrać tylko 2 albumy, których chcielibyście słuchać do końca roku, co by to było?

Josh: Pewnie soundtrack do Incepcji Hansa Zimmera i Grand Unification Fightstar.

Steve: Ja wybrałbym An Age Among Them Rinoa – to jeden z moich ulubionych albumów i Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain Mono/World End’s Girlfriend. Może nazwa nie brzmi za dobrze, ale jest przepiękny. Uwielbiam ten album.

Ulubione zwierzę?

Josh: Lubię króliki.

Steve: Lubię psy i koty, bardziej koty.

Możecie opisać Waszą muzykę używając 3 słów?

Josh: Duża, epicka, ambientowa.

Który z Was najbardziej denerwuje resztę w trasie?

[śmiech]

Steve: Nie możemy odpowiedzieć na to pytanie.

Josh: Nasz gitarzysta, Angus [śmiech].

Steve: Nie jest denerwujący, ale jest z pewnością osobą o której dużo żartujemy. Jego twarz jest na odwrocie naszych tour-passów. Jest świetnym, śmiesznym człowiekiem

Czy robicie sobie jakieś dowcipy?

 

Josh: Nie, po prostu jesteśmy dla siebie okropni.

Steve: Nie robimy sobie żartów, bo wiemy, że jeżeli byśmy jakiś zrobili to ktoś zrobiłby nam, a nie lubimy być wyśmiewani.

Lubicie nasz język?

Razem: Tak, jest piękny.

Steve: Mój tata jest Polakiem. Mówi po polsku, ale nigdy mnie nie uczył, trochę tego żałuję. Urodził się w Anglii ale mówi bardzo płynnie. Moja babcia i ciocia przeprowadziły się do Anglii podczas wojny a mój dziadek dołączył do nich po wojnie.

[Poprosiłam Steve’a, żeby powiedział parę słów po polsku i spisał się całkiem nieźle]

Znacie jakiś polski zespół?

Josh: Behemoth? Oni są z Polski?

Steve: Tak. Nigdy ich nie słuchałem, są trochę za ciężcy.

Josh: Są trochę szatańscy.

Chcecie coś powiedzieć fanom?

Josh: Jeżeli mamy fanów…

Jestem pewna, że macie.

Josh: Dziękujemy wszystkim.

Steve: Dziękujemy wszystkim, którzy nas słuchają, to wiele dla nas znaczy. Robimy to dla Was. Mamy nadzieję, że w przyszłości nadal będzie się Wam podobać to co robimy i nadal będziecie nas wspierać.

Josh: Ściągnijcie album jak wyjdzie.

Steve: Nawet nielegalnie, nie obchodzi nas jak.

Josh: Po prostu go miejcie.

Could you say something about yourself?

I’m Josh, I’m the vocalist

I’m Steve and I’m the bassist

Both: For Echoes [laugh]

How did the band form?

Josh: Well, me and Steve met at the University in Winchester, England and we just started jamming.  I played the guitar but I ended up wanting to be a front man and Steve ended up playing bass.

Steve: It was a kind of mismatch of people over the time. The final formation didn’t come straight away, we were a band a year or so before we formed Echoes. Since then we have found our sound.

Where are you from?

Steve: We’re from all over the south of the UK at the moment but we originally started at the place called Winchester which is about an hour - hour and a half from London. I live in Reading, Angus lives in Maidenhead which is near Reading, Ollie and Karl live in Winchester and...

Josh: I live on an Island... :(

Steve: Josh lives on the Isle of Wight

Josh: It’s an island in the middle of nowhere, which has nothing but cattle and fields.

Steve: And loads of dogs.

So do you have any kind of trouble while doing the rehearsals because you don’t live in the same place?

Josh: It’s difficult, because we have separate jobs. We went to the University together and now we have all gone with our own thing .

Steve: We practice twice a month. It’s nowhere near enough and we know that, but Josh has to get a boat over and a train. Me and Angus have to drive an hour and a half .

Josh: It’s difficult at the moment but we get by.

What have you been studying?

Steve: Most of us have done art. I did graphic design

Josh: I did Fine Art but specialised in Painting.

Steve: Ollie did graphic design as well, Karl did the same as Josh  - Fine Art and Angus is doing illustration. Creative people [laugh].

What do you do besides being musicians?

[laugh]

Steve: I work in retail and sell things. So do Ollie and Karl.

Josh: I operate machinery.

Steve: [laugh] He works at theme park. A rubbish one on the Isle of Wight... Angus works in a bar.

Josh: We have to do that at the moment.

Steve: But we make enough money to help the band get by.

 

What do you want to achieve as a band? 

Josh: World domination [laugh]. We’ve already got past our expectations.

Steve: When we first started this we never would have dreamed about touring Europe and being in Poland today, it’s just been a really great experience. I guess we just want to keep doing the same, keep playing shows and just make music that we enjoy and people can enjoy as well.

Josh: We are super grateful for everything that has happened.

Steve: We just want to continue what we do and hopefully, you never know, things may get better for us.

Josh: Stadiums...[laugh]

Steve: We are living the dream right now.

What’s your current favourite song to play live?

Steve: Probably one song that no one has heard yet. It’s on our new album that will be out... We don’t know when, but soon, hopefully. It’s called For What It’s Worth and I think the one that means the most to us and it’s just fun to play live. I think it’s the one that represents us as a band the most.

Josh: We really enjoy playing it, we wouldn’t have written it if we didn’t!

You’ve mentioned the new album. Is this the only upcoming release you will have?

Josh: We recorded it in October and we are just waiting now...

Can you say something more about it?

Steve: Not really, we’re releasing the first single off it in June which will be called Honour Lost and you can see a trailer for it on YT.

Josh: We did a video for that song.

How is this tour going?

Steve: Really well.

Josh: Amazing! Its exceeded our expectations!

Steve: It has opened our eyes to a lot of things, we definitely had better crowds and better reception here than in UK.

Josh: How do people know the words to our songs? I have no idea...

Steve: Everyone’s been so welcoming , we’ve had an amazing time, we couldn’t thank Europe enough as a whole.

Do you have funny stories from tour to share?

Steve: We don’t have funny stories but when we played in Bratislava… it was weird but amazing. Weird, cause there was so many people there that knew us and one guy traveled 9 hours to see us.

Josh: Even one hour to see us is mental. It is so humbling.

Steve: Taking 18 hours from his life to see us is just crazy. I guess that show was kind of a pinnacle of what we do and why we do it and made us realize how lucky we are.

Josh: We met some amazing people on our way and this guy was definitely one of them. 9 hours! Stupid.

Are you surprised that you got so much attention, especially today in Warsaw? You’ve recorded Leaving None Behind live and now you are being interviewed...

Steve: Today’s been out of this world. Just turning up and being met by you guys and playing one song for a video and doing some things for a blog which is awesome to do. Its different for us. We’ve never done that before. Being shown around the city, taken for a dinner – that would never happen where we’re from.

Josh: Even in the other countries we went to. It’s been so nice.

Steve: We’ve been treated like kings and we just don’t know why [laugh]. It’s been great, Warsaw is a lovely city as well.

Do you like it? I’ve heard you’d been in centre?

Josh: Yep, it is so beautiful!

Steve: Yes, we’ve been in the old town, new town, we had traditional Polish dumplings and it was the first time on tour we actually had tried traditional stuff and it’s so nice to be able to do that.

I must teach you that – these dumpling are called “pierogi” in Polish.

Josh and Steve: [tried few times, perfectly in Polish] Pierogi [laugh]

Steve: I’m half Polish and I can’t speak it... I blame my dad! [laugh]

Josh: Now we have done, next time we’re in Europe we are going to try more traditional things.

What bands influenced you the most?

Steve: That’s a difficult one, I mean we take so many influences. Things like classical, my favourite band is Rinoa. When we started we kind of wanted to be like them, but now it’s different. We listen to a lot of post rock too.

Josh: And instrumental stuff, we don’t really listen to much metal.

Steve: We take influences from everywhere and it’s benefited us greatly.

What do you listen to while being on a tour?

Steve: The Boys of summer.

Josh: 80’s, cheesy music.

Steve: We’ve been listening also to a band from the UK called Daughter who are amazing, great, kind of post rocky ambient which is awesome.

Josh: Yeah, they’re really cool. A bit of Linkin Park, Fleetwood Mac.

Steve: Coldplay.

This new record or their older albums?

Steve: I prefer their older stuff, Rush of Blood to the Head and stuff like this. They’re a great band. I love them. And of course LANA DEL RAY! Lana Del Ray...I love you.

Josh: WHAT? [laughs]

What’s the first concert you have ever been to?

Josh: My dad took me to see Alice Cooper and Journey, it was kind of festival.

Steve: I think it might have been Jack Johnson. I love him too.

If you had to choose only 2 CDs that you can listen to during this year what would you pick?

Josh: It’d probably be Hans Zimmer’s Inception soundtrack and Grand Unification by Fightstar.

Steve: For me it’d be An Age Among Them by Rinoa – it’s one of my favourite albums of all time and probably Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain by Mono/World End’s Girlfriend. The name doesn’t sound great but it’s beautiful, like modern classical. I love that album so much.

What’s your favourite animal?

Josh: I like rabbits.

Steve: I’m a bigger cat and dog man, probably cat. 

Could you describe your music using only 3 words?

Josh: Big, epic, ambient.

Who is the most annoying on tour?

[laugh]

Steve: I can’t answer that question.

Josh: Our guitarist, Angus [laughs]

Steve: He’s not annoying, but he’s definitely the guy we joke about a lot! His face is on the back of our tour passes. He’s a great guy but a funny man.

Do you make some kind of pranks to each other?

Josh: No, we’re just really horrible to each other.

Steve: We don’t do pranks because we know that if we do one, we’ll get it back and we’re not very good at receiving abuse.

Do you like our language?

Both: Yes, it’s beautiful.

Steve: My dad’s Polish. He speaks Polish, but he never taught me and I’m a little bit gutted about that. He was born in England but he speaks the language fluently. My grandma and my aunt moved to UK during war and my granddad found them after the war was done which is quite cool.

[I started asking Steve to say something in Polish. He did quite well. ]

Do you know any Polish bands?

Josh: Behemoth? Are they Polish?

Steve: Yes, they are. I haven’t listened to much of their music. They’re too heavy for us.

Josh: They’re a bit sinister.

Do you want to say something to your fans?

Josh: If there are any fans…

I’m sure you have fans.

Josh: Thanks to everyone.
